Science and technology shape every part of modern life, from the phones in our pockets to the way we produce energy. But progress also raises a key question for our generation: how can we develop without destroying the planet? This unit builds the vocabulary and ideas you need to discuss innovation, the environment, and sustainable development in the Bac.
10.1 Key vocabulary

| innovation | a new idea, method or device. Solar panels were a major innovation. |
| artificial intelligence (AI) | machines that can learn and make decisions like humans. AI helps doctors read scans. |
| renewable energy | energy from sources that never run out (sun, wind, water). Morocco invests in renewable energy. |
| fossil fuels | coal, oil and gas formed underground; they are limited and polluting. |
| climate change | long-term changes in the world''s weather, mostly caused by humans. |
| global warming | the rise in the Earth''s average temperature. |
| pollution | harmful substances in the air, water or soil. Cars cause air pollution. |
| recycling | turning used materials into new products. We sort waste for recycling. |
| biodiversity | the variety of plants and animals in a region. |
| carbon footprint | the amount of CO2 a person or activity produces. Flying increases your carbon footprint. |
| sustainability | using resources without harming the future. |
| breakthrough | an important discovery or sudden progress. a medical breakthrough. |
| device | a machine made for a purpose (phone, sensor). |
| data | information collected and stored, often by computers. |
| research | careful study to discover new facts. |
| scientist | a person who studies science. |
| endangered species | a type of animal at risk of disappearing. |
| deforestation | the cutting down of large areas of forest. |
| greenhouse gases | gases (like CO2) that trap heat in the atmosphere. |
| conservation | protecting nature and natural resources. |
10.2 Useful expressions
Advantages: Technology makes life easier. It saves time and money. The Internet gives access to information. AI can solve complex problems. Disadvantages: Technology can be addictive. It reduces face-to-face contact. Some jobs may disappear. There are risks to privacy and data.
- On the one hand, smartphones connect people; on the other hand, they can isolate us.
- One major drawback of social media is the spread of fake news.
- A clear benefit of renewable energy is that it does not pollute.
