Talking about the Future

Cours · anglais (2 Bac, Maroc), chapitre 2 · Maroc, 2e année du Bac · le début du chapitre, la suite sur Adloun

English has no single "future tense": instead it uses several forms, and the one you choose depends on how you see the future — as a prediction, a plan, an arrangement, or a fixed schedule. This unit reviews these forms, their uses, and the time markers that go with them.

2.1 Will for the Future

Définition 2.1Form and use

Form: will + base verb (same for all persons). Negative: won't. Questions: Will + subject + verb? Use: predictions about the future, spontaneous decisions made at the moment of speaking, promises, and offers.

Exemple 2.2
  • I think it will rain tomorrow. (prediction)
  • The phone is ringing — I 'll answer it. (spontaneous decision)
  • I promise I won't tell anyone. (promise)
  • That bag looks heavy; I 'll carry it for you. (offer)
iRemarque

Use will when you decide as you speak, with no earlier plan. Verbs like think, believe, hope, expect and adverbs like probably, perhaps, maybe often introduce a prediction with will.

2.2 Be Going To

Définition 2.3Form and use

Form: am / is / are + going to + base verb. Use: an intention or plan decided before the moment of speaking, or a prediction based on present evidence that you can see now.

Exemple 2.4
  • We are going to visit my grandparents this weekend. (plan decided earlier)
  • She is going to study medicine at university. (intention)
  • Look at those dark clouds — it is going to rain. (prediction from evidence)

2.3 Will or Be Going To?

Propriété : The key contrast

  • Decision made now → will. The bus is late; I 'll walk home.
  • Decision made before → be going to. I 'm going to walk home — I planned it this morning.
  • Prediction with no proof (just an opinion) → will. I think our team will win.
  • Prediction with present evidence you can point to → be going to. He's driving too fast; he 's going to crash.
