« (1) City centres are dying, and pedestrianisation is often blamed. (2) This article will argue that the diagnosis is precisely the wrong way round. (3) Streets closed to cars consistently show higher footfall a year after the change. (4) Admittedly, small retailers often suffer during the works themselves, and their anger is legitimate. (5) But temporary disruption is not the same thing as permanent decline. (6) If town centres are emptying, the cause lies elsewhere — in online shopping and in rents no local baker can pay. »

- Thèse : phrase 2 — the diagnosis is precisely the wrong way round. Elle est annoncée par la formule This article will argue that, et se trouve, comme presque toujours, en fin d'introduction.
- Topic sentence de l'argument : phrase 3 — la donnée qui soutient la thèse (higher footfall).
- Concession : phrase 4, signalée par Admittedly, et suivie de son dépassement en phrase 5, signalé par But.
- Conclusion : phrase 6, qui déplace la cause et rouvre le débat.
Le réflexe à installer. Chercher d'abord les mots-signaux — will argue that, admittedly, but, if… then — avant de chercher les idées. En anglais argumentatif, la charpente est presque toujours dite explicitement : il suffit de la repérer.
