In the Bac exam, the Writing task is worth 10 points — a quarter of the whole paper. You are usually asked to write a short text (about 80–120 words) in a given genre: an article, a blog post, an email, or an opinion paragraph. Good writing is not about long, rare words; it is about a clear plan, a logical structure, and simple, correct sentences. This unit shows you how to build a paragraph, how to handle each genre, and which connectors and habits earn marks.

16.1 The structure of a paragraph

Définition 16.1The four parts

A well-built paragraph has four moves:

  • Topic sentence: the main idea, announced in one clear sentence.
  • Supporting ideas: two or three reasons or details that develop the idea.
  • Examples: a fact, a personal experience or a figure that proves each idea.
  • Concluding sentence: a short closing that restates the main idea in new words.
Exemple 16.2

Topic sentence: Reading every day improves a student's life in several ways. Support + example: Firstly, it widens vocabulary; a friend of mine learned hundreds of words simply by reading novels. Support + example: Moreover, it builds concentration, because following a story trains the mind to focus. Concluding sentence: For these reasons, a daily reading habit is a small effort with a big reward.

iRemarque

Keep one main idea per paragraph. A new idea deserves a new paragraph. A topic sentence that promises one thing and a conclusion that delivers another confuses the reader and loses marks.

16.2 Writing an article

Définition 16.3Structure and conventions

An article informs or entertains readers of a magazine, newspaper or school journal.

  • Title: short and catchy, sometimes a question.
  • Introduction: present the topic and grab attention.
  • Body: one or two paragraphs developing the main points.
  • Conclusion: a closing thought, a piece of advice or a call to act. Tone is semi-formal; you may address the reader with you.
