Document A : « Cities across Europe are banning cars from their centres. Supporters point to cleaner air and safer streets, and to shopkeepers who, despite their fears, have seen more customers on foot. The car, they argue, was a twentieth-century solution that has become a twenty-first-century problem. » Document B : « For residents of outer suburbs and villages, the car is not a lifestyle but a necessity. Without frequent buses or trains, banning cars from city centres simply shuts them out of jobs, hospitals and shops. Green policies that ignore geography risk turning environmental goals into a privilege of the urban middle class. »
Corrigé
Proposition (environ 115 mots) : Both documents address the same question: should cars be banned from city centres? Document A welcomes the trend. It presents car-free centres as beneficial for public health and road safety, and even for local businesses, whose fears of losing customers proved unfounded; the car is portrayed as an outdated solution. Document B does not reject the environmental goal but questions its fairness. For people living in poorly served suburbs and rural areas, driving is a necessity, and such bans deprive them of access to essential services. The documents therefore diverge less on the aim than on its social cost: what A sees as progress, B sees as a measure designed by and for urban residents.
