The English-speaking world beyond Britain and America · niveau 3 (difficile)
Énoncé
Résumer en anglais, en 150 mots environ, les deux textes suivants (écrits pour ce livre), en dégageant la question commune, la thèse de chacun et leur point de désaccord. Document A : « The Commonwealth is an anachronism. It has no army, no budget worth the name and no power to enforce its own charter, and its members disagree on almost everything that matters. It survives because nobody bothers to abolish it. Young people in Lagos or Delhi have never heard of it; what binds them to the English-speaking world is not a club of governments but the internet. » Document B : « To judge the Commonwealth by its powers is to misunderstand it. Its value lies in what it makes easy: a common language, similar legal systems, networks of universities and professions. For small states, it is a rare forum where they sit as equals with India and Canada, and where their priorities, such as climate, are heard. »
Corrigé
Proposition (environ 150 mots) : Both documents ask whether the Commonwealth still serves any purpose. Document A dismisses it as a relic. It stresses the organisation's lack of military, financial and legal means, and the divisions among its members; in A's view, it endures only through inertia, and the real link between young people across the English-speaking world is digital, not institutional. Document B argues that this criticism applies the wrong criterion. The Commonwealth should be valued not for its powers but for the ties it facilitates, from a shared language and legal traditions to academic and professional networks. B also underlines its importance for small states, which find in it a forum of equals where issues such as climate change receive attention. The two texts thus agree that the Commonwealth has little power, but disagree on whether power is the right measure of its usefulness.
Ce qui fait la note. Un désaccord formulé sur le critère d'évaluation, ce qui est plus fin que « A est contre, B est pour » ; les énumérations des documents résumées par des catégories (military, financial and legal means) ; aucun chiffre extérieur.
