Sujet : Can economic growth and the fight against climate change be reconciled?

(a) Plan détaillé. I. Growth and emissions have long moved together, which makes scepticism understandable. (1) Industrialisation was built on coal, then oil. (2) The globalisation of manufacturing, symbolised by China's entry into the WTO in 2001, shifted production rather than cleaning it. II. Yet decoupling is technically possible, and policy can speed it up. (1) Renewables and electrification allow output to grow while emissions fall. (2) The Inflation Reduction Act of August 2022 shows a major economy betting on ``green growth'' through tax credits for clean energy. III. Reconciliation, however, requires changing the nature of growth, not merely its energy source. (1) Carbon must be priced so that markets stop rewarding pollution. (2) Rich countries will have to accept that some forms of consumption shrink, and measure progress by more than GDP; the Paris Agreement of 2015, by relying on national pledges, shows that this depends on political will.
(b) Introduction : When almost every country adopted the Paris Agreement in December 2015, pledging to keep global warming well below 2 degrees, it implicitly bet that prosperity and climate protection could go hand in hand. More than a decade later, that bet remains open. Some argue that growth itself is the problem; yet growth also funds hospitals, pensions and the energy transition. The question is therefore not whether the two are compatible in principle, but under what conditions, and how fast. This essay will argue that they can be reconciled, but only if growth changes in nature, not merely in pace.
(c) Conclusion : Growth and the fight against climate change are not irreconcilable, but nor do they reconcile themselves. History shows that prosperity long rested on fossil fuels; recent policy, from the Paris Agreement to the Inflation Reduction Act, shows governments betting on cleaner growth. Whether that bet pays off depends less on technology than on political will: pricing carbon, accepting that some consumption must shrink, sharing the cost fairly. The question for the coming decades is less whether growth can be green than whether it can become green fast enough.
Langue : nor do they (inversion après nor), less… than, whether répété avec effet d'écho.
