Proposition : When the Covid-19 pandemic emptied offices in 2020, millions of employees discovered that much of their work could be done from home. Many now have no wish to return full time, while employers worry about lost cohesion. The question is no longer whether remote work is possible, but whether it should become the default arrangement. This essay will argue that it should be a right for those whose jobs allow it, but not the norm.

Admittedly, the case for remote work is strong. The most tangible gain is time: every hour not spent commuting can be devoted to work, rest or family. Remote work also widens the pool of talent, since a firm based in London can hire someone living hundreds of miles away, and it eases the pressure on housing in expensive city centres. For many parents, and for people with disabilities, it has made employment compatible with their lives.

Yet making it the norm would carry hidden costs. Much of what young employees learn is absorbed informally, by watching colleagues handle a difficult client or a tense meeting, and this apprenticeship does not survive the move to video calls. Innovation, too, often springs from chance encounters that no scheduled call can reproduce, and managers find it harder to notice an employee who is struggling when they only ever see a face on a screen. Above all, remote work is a privilege of office jobs: nurses, cashiers and delivery drivers cannot work from a kitchen table, and a society that treats remote work as normal risks forgetting those who make it possible.

The wisest course therefore lies between the two extremes. Rather than imposing a single model, employers and employees could negotiate hybrid arrangements, keeping the office as a place for training, collaboration and team spirit while leaving routine tasks to be done at home. Many firms have already found such a balance; the task now is to make it fair. Remote work should be a right where it is feasible, not an obligation, and certainly not a norm that ignores the many for whom it will never be an option.

Langue : since causal, too en incise, Above all, risks forgetting (risk suivi de la forme en -ing), the many for whom (relative prépositionnelle soutenue).
