(although / despite) (b) … prices were rising, wages stagnated. (although / in spite of) (c) The factory closed … the lack of orders. (because / because of) (d) Many shops closed … the lockdown. (while / during) (e) He saved money … buy a flat. (for / in order to) (f) We will decide when the figures … published. (are / will be)

Corrigé

(a) Despite : suivi d'un groupe nominal (the recession). Although exigerait un sujet et un verbe (although there was a recession).

(b) Although : suivi d'une proposition (prices were rising). In spite of exigerait un nom ou un -ing (in spite of rising prices).

(c) Because of : suivi d'un nom (the lack of orders).

(d) During : suivi d'un nom. While exigerait une proposition (while the country was in lockdown).

(e) In order to (ou to seul) : le but s'exprime par l'infinitif. For buy et for to buy sont fautifs.

(f) Are : après when, le présent exprime le futur. When the figures will be published est la faute classique du calque français.
