Le past perfect construit les retours en arrière. Dans l'extrait suivant, dites où commence et où finit le flashback, et par quel signal grammatical.
She locked the office and walked to the car park. She had started here twenty years earlier, straight out of university. In those days the building had been half empty; she had known every name on every door. Now she turned the key and drove off without looking back.

Le flashback commence à She had started here twenty years earlier et se termine après she had known every name on every door. Le retour au présent du récit est signalé par Now she turned the key : on revient au prétérit simple.
La technique, nommée. Le past perfect ouvre le retour en arrière ; l'adverbe (now, at last, that evening) accompagné du prétérit le referme. Un texte long ne reste pas au past perfect : après une ou deux phrases, l'anglais bascule au prétérit à l'intérieur du flashback, l'antériorité étant déjà installée.
