Exemple : The Cambridge Analytica scandal broke in March 2018, when The Guardian, The Observer and The New York Times revealed a massive data harvesting scheme. The story deals with how Facebook data of 87 million users had been collected without proper consent through a personality quiz app, then sold to Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm. The whistleblower, Christopher Wylie, showed that these data had been used to microtarget voters during the 2016 US election and the Brexit referendum. Mark Zuckerberg was summoned before the US Congress in April 2018, and Cambridge Analytica shut down the following month. The main point is that the scandal reshaped the global debate on data protection: it accelerated the RGPD in Europe, led to a record \$5 billion FTC fine on Facebook in 2019, and raised the question of whether elections themselves can still be considered fair in a data-driven age.
