Exercice supplémentaire · niveau 3 (difficile) · anglais (première), chapitre 10 — Citizenship and Virtual Worlds · Hypothèse, certitude, causalité
Énoncé
Récrivez chaque phrase avec la structure hypothétique indiquée, sans changer le sens.
- The scandal was revealed because a former employee spoke to the press. (irréel du passé : If… had not…)
- Platforms will not change unless regulators impose deadlines. (provided that)
- Without the leaked documents, nobody would have known. (Were it not for…)
- Users rarely read terms of service, so consent means very little. (If… were to…)
Corrigé
- If a former employee had not spoken to the press, the scandal would not have been revealed. — irréel du passé : if + past perfect dans la subordonnée, would have + participe dans la principale.
- Platforms will change provided that regulators impose deadlines. — provided that pose une condition suffisante ; noter que la phrase passe de la négative à l'affirmative.
- Were it not for the leaked documents, nobody would have known. — inversion figée de registre soutenu, équivalente à If it were not for.
- If users were to read terms of service, consent would mean something. — were to + infinitif présente l'hypothèse comme improbable ou théorique.
Le piège classique : pas de would dans la subordonnée en if. On écrit If they had known, jamais **If they would have known*.
