Voici cinq répliques d'une audition parlementaire. Propos fictifs, destinés à l'exercice de grammaire. Mettez-les au discours indirect.
- « We are not reading your messages, » the executive said.
- « I copied the documents before I resigned, » the former engineer explained.
- « Will you publish the internal research? » a member of the committee asked.
- « Send us the full dataset by Friday, » the chair told the company.
- « The algorithm has been changed twice since then, » she added.
Corrigé
- The executive said that they were not reading our messages. — présent en be + -ing reculé au prétérit ; your devient our ou the members' selon le point de vue adopté.
- The former engineer explained that she had copied the documents before she resigned. — le prétérit recule au past perfect ; dans la subordonnée introduite par before, l'ordre chronologique étant déjà marqué, le prétérit suffit.
- A member of the committee asked whether they would publish the internal research. — question fermée : whether (ou if), ordre sujet-verbe rétabli, pas de point d'interrogation ; will devient would.
- The chair told the company to send them the full dataset by the Friday. — impératif rapporté par tell + complément + to + infinitif.
- She added that the algorithm had been changed twice since then. — le present perfect passif recule au past perfect passif.
La règle en une ligne : au discours indirect, le temps recule d'un cran, les personnes et les repères se recalculent, et la syntaxe interrogative ou impérative se défait. Le piège : whether et non **that pour une question fermée ; et if* est possible, mais jamais après une préposition.
