- Learning a foreign language is pointless now that translation software exists.
- Museums should charge an entrance fee, since those who use them should pay for them.
Corrigé
- If I understand you correctly, you are saying that machines have made language learning redundant. I accept that translation software now handles routine texts very well. But a language is not only a code to be decoded: negotiating, joking, apologising and persuading all depend on knowing what a phrase costs the person who says it — and no translation engine has ever had to live with the consequences of its own sentence.
- So your position is that the user should pay. I grant that public funds are limited and that the argument is one of fairness. Yet entrance fees do not select the people who use museums least — they select the people who can afford them. When British national museums abolished charges in 2001, visitor numbers rose sharply, and the rise came largely from groups who had not been coming.
