On the one hand, Achebe argued in 1965 that English could be adapted to carry African experience, and his masterpiece Things Fall Apart is written in English while embedding Igbo proverbs. On the other hand, Ngũgĩ, in Decolonising the Mind (1986), rejected English altogether and pledged to write only in Gikuyu, his mother tongue. For Achebe, English is a tool that can be reshaped; for Ngũgĩ, it is a Trojan horse of continued domination. Admittedly, Achebe's choice gave African literature a global reach; however, Ngũgĩ's stance kept the political stakes of language visible. Arguably, both positions remain relevant today, wherever writers negotiate between a dominant language and their heritage languages.
