Although — + proposition (sujet + verbe).
Despite ou In spite of — + groupe nominal.
however — adverbe de liaison entre deux phrases, encadré de ponctuation.
whereas — comparaison de deux faits également vrais, sans idée de surprise.
Despite ou In spite of — + -ing.
Even though — concession renforcée : le fait admis rendait l'issue improbable.

La distinction qui décide : whereas et while comparent ; although et even though concèdent ; despite et in spite of demandent un nom ou un -ing. La faute à ne jamais commettre : **despite of*.
