Modèle : The photograph shows some thirty men walking down the gangway of a liner at an English port in June 1948. In the foreground, a press photographer is visible, camera raised. The men are dressed formally, in suits and hats, and several of them are looking straight at the lens. At first sight, the image reads as a document: it records an arrival. On closer inspection, it is also a staged scene, since the passengers know they are being photographed and have dressed for the occasion. This double status is what makes the picture useful. It tells us about the arrival itself, but it also tells us how the arrival was meant to be seen — as respectable, orderly and confident. Arguably, the image has since been asked to carry more than it shows: it is routinely used to illustrate seventy years of migration history, although it captures a single morning. That is worth remembering, because a photograph that becomes a symbol tends to stop being read as evidence.
