- « I will never write a novel in English again, » the novelist announced.
- « Why did the Home Office destroy the landing cards? » the journalist asked.
- « Check your family's documents before you travel, » the lawyer told them.

- Achebe wrote in 1965 that English could be made to carry the weight of his African experience. — can devient could ; le possessif suit le changement d'énonciateur.
- The novelist announced that he would never write a novel in English again. — will devient would.
- The journalist asked why the Home Office had destroyed the landing cards. — question indirecte : ordre sujet-verbe rétabli, pas d'auxiliaire did, pas de point d'interrogation ; le prétérit recule au past perfect.
- The lawyer told them to check their family's documents before they travelled. — un impératif rapporté devient ***tell* + complément + to** + infinitif.
La règle en une ligne : au discours indirect, trois choses bougent ensemble — le temps recule d'un cran, les personnes changent de repère, et la syntaxe interrogative ou impérative se défait.
