- The two systems look similar, but the vocabulary is entirely different. (whilst)
- You may be right. I still think the sign should stay. (be that as it may)
Corrigé
- Much as I admire his novels, I disagree with his choice of language. — much as en tête de phrase = « si fort que » ; il concède un sentiment.
- Granted that his argument is coherent, it rests on a single example. — granted that admet la validité formelle avant d'attaquer le fond.
- For all its cost, the policy worked. — for all + groupe nominal ; équivalent soutenu de despite.
- Whilst the two systems look similar, the vocabulary is entirely different. — whilst est la variante britannique soutenue de while ; il concède ou compare selon le contexte.
- You may be right. Be that as it may, I still think the sign should stay. — formule figée, invariable, toujours détachée par une virgule.
Ce qui distingue ces cinq structures : elles concèdent toutes, mais pas au même endroit de la phrase. Much as et granted that ouvrent une subordonnée ; for all régit un nom ; be that as it may est une phrase à lui seul.
