Modèle : The poster shows an elderly man in a top hat set against a plain, light background. He is pointing his index finger directly out of the frame, and his eyes are fixed on the viewer. Beneath the figure, a single line of red capitals runs across the whole width of the sheet. The composition is stripped of any setting: there is no room, no landscape, nothing to look at except the man and the sentence. Formally, the pointing finger and the frontal gaze do the same work, which is to convert a printed sheet into a personal address. The viewer is not shown a scene; the viewer is spoken to. This is what makes the image so easily reusable: since it depicts no particular war, it can serve any of them, and it was in fact reissued during the Second World War. Arguably, its power lies in an absence rather than in an argument, because nothing in it can be contradicted. That is worth naming: a poster that cannot be argued with is not persuading, it is instructing.
