Exemple : The Armada Portrait, painted around 1588 and attributed to George Gower, depicts Queen Elizabeth I in a magnificent white dress embroidered with pearls. In the foreground, she rests her hand on a terrestrial globe, her fingers on the Americas. In the background, two maritime scenes are visible: the English fleet on one side, the Spanish Armada being destroyed by a storm on the other. Symbolically, the queen is presented as the master of the seas and, arguably, of the world. Pearls symbolise virginity and wealth ; the globe conveys imperial ambition. The portrait, painted after the actual defeat of the Armada in 1588, is less a documentary record than a political statement: it constructs Elizabeth as an invincible protectress.
