Mettez au discours indirect. Les propos sont fictifs et servent uniquement d'exercice de grammaire.
- « We are not banning the play; we are asking for two lines to be changed, » the official said.
- « I will not rewrite a single word, » the playwright replied.
- « Who decides what an audience can hear? » a journalist asked.
- « Read the licensing act before you write about it, » the archivist told them.
- « The play was performed last week in Dublin, » she added.

- The official said that they were not banning the play, but that they were asking for two lines to be changed. — présent en be + -ing reculé au prétérit en be + -ing.
- The playwright replied that he / she would not rewrite a single word. — will devient would.
- A journalist asked who decided what an audience could hear. — question indirecte : ordre sujet-verbe, pas de point d'interrogation ; can devient could. Noter que who est ici sujet : il n'y a donc pas d'inversion à défaire.
- The archivist told them to read the licensing act before they wrote about it. — impératif rapporté par tell + complément + to + infinitif.
- She added that the play had been performed the previous week in Dublin. — le prétérit recule au past perfect, et last week devient the previous week : les repères temporels changent avec l'énonciateur.
La règle en une ligne : au discours indirect, le temps recule d'un cran, les personnes et les repères spatio-temporels se recalculent, et la syntaxe des questions et des ordres se défait.
